Diminished complexity of heart rate time series in adolescents facing negative events during everyday life

چکیده

Physiological systems need to be flexible in order adapt a changing environment. Negative events, however, induce flexibility reductions that seem necessary for coping purposes. To date, studies have measured linear variability and entropy heart output, but none examined the scaling properties of cardiac system when individuals deal with stressful everyday events. This study was aimed at testing hypothesis complexity dynamics is diminished face negative events real life. Cardiac (linear) (nonlinear), as well discomfort effectiveness event-related emotion regulation (EER) were ecologically N = 65 adolescents (Mage 14.80 years; SDage 0.86; 55.38% girls). Repeated Measures MANOVAs revealed higher rate (HR) lower (higher long-term exponent, p .029; Fractal Dimension FD, .030; Sample Entropy, .001) during EER comparison non-emotion conditions (NER). Wilcoxon non-parametric tests Hurst exponents (p .006) than NER. No significant correlations found between variables although NER conditions, greater self-rated < .050). processes involved increases HR FD changes might reflect real-time scale’s predominance output are dealing Keywords: adolescence; regulation; complexity; variability; observational descriptive

Negative life events, distress, and coping among adolescents in Botswana

This study examined the potential mediating and moderating effects of different ways of coping on the impact of negative life events (NLE) on psychological health among adolescents, 63 boys and 66 girls, in Botswana. Distraction as a way of coping and seeking social support were found to reduce the impact of NLE on psychological health concerns. Rumination was associated with increased distress...

Multimodal databases of everyday emotion: facing up to complexity

In everyday life, speech is part of a multichannel system involved in conveying emotion. Understanding how it operates in that context requires suitable data, consisting of multimodal records of emotion drawn from everyday life. This paper reflects the experience of two teams active in collecting and labelling data of this type. It sets out the core reasons for pursuing a multimodal approach, r...

Diminished Short-Term Heart Rate

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether short-term heart rate variability (HRV) can be used successfully to predict inducible ventricular tachycardia (VT). Methods: A high-speed (300 mm/s) electrocardiographs recording was obtained in 32 patients in the supine position prior to programmed ventricular stimulation. Beat-to-beat RR intervals (in milliseconds) were derived from a...

Aesthetics of Everyday Life

Aesthetics of everyday life is one of the branches of aesthetic knowledge. Until the 20th century, classical aesthetics focused on the subject of visual arts and paid less attention to the formation of fine arts in the context of human and nature’s daily life experience. During the last few decades, a movement emerged that, by avoiding that one-sided art-oriented approach, tried to create a clo...
